Banshu Handkerchief

Handkerchiefs featuring Japanese floral patterns created with high-definition printing.

The handkerchiefs featured here were made by Sewing Takeuchi in Taka-cho, Hyogo Prefecture. Taka-cho is known as the birthplace of Yamada Nishiki, a famous sake rice, and is a naturally rich area surrounded by pure water. For centuries, the town has been known for its fine-count cotton weaving and handmade Japanese paper production.

The most noteworthy feature of these handkerchiefs is undoubtedly the high-definition printing technology. Due to the complex and vibrant design, considerable skill is required to reproduce it on the fabric. If the original design were printed as is, the ink would soak into the fabric, blurring the fine lines, so meticulous adjustments were made while anticipating the final result. The delicate detail of the final printed design is truly magnificent.

The stitching at the edges is extremely fine, and is woven using a highly advanced technique called "sanmaki," where the fabric is folded inward not just once, but three times before being sewn straight.
